The Merygold Experiment for Nigerian Children, teenagers and young adults

investing in a solid foundation.
No doubt they pay for the best that they could get. And no doubt the best that they get in most cases are not really the
best that the country could offer in terms of solid and quality education.
Since English has remained the language of instruction in our academics, we need to do more for the child so that its
journey through various hurdles of excellence is scaleable.
Merygold is really concerned about the level of spoken English taught in most nursery/primary schools in Nigeria. We all
know that the knowledge of the language acquired by a well educated person in the country is rich, but the bulk of the
learning process and fluency that such a person must have wangled through has come from travelling here and there
and having contacts, decidedly embracing that perfection all in his/her individuality.
Merygold is looking at the possibility of working with parents who would want to see their wards speak English the way it
should be spoken. (Joining this programme is actually placing the best foundation for a standard Nigerian Education in
the hands of our children).
We are looking at he possiblity of working with schools who are out for ways to better the quality of spoken English in
Nigeria. For schools that would like to help demand their best from the teachers they have employed. (Not joining this
programme is saying that children should continue to suffer the same fate that we suffered trying to learn English the old
rigorous way).
It is no exaggeration that most of the candidates for most maturity examinations hardly understand a greater chunk of
the questions they may be trying to answer in an examination hall. This is because they lack that sound foundation.
We would like to take English grammar burden away from the usual defining natures and give it a face. We would like to
break it into the simplest, understandable pieces so that confusion could become a thing of the past. The more we know
the use of that language, the better our chances of making that application effective.
Let your child be a part of this wonderful experience! NO CHILD WOULD BE FLOGGED, HIT ON THE HEAD OR ANY OTHER PART OF THE BODY WHATEVER HAPPENS THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT. AND DO YOU WANT TO ASK US AT MERYGOLD IF IT WORKS? YES, IT DOES! AND WONDERFULLY, TOO. Reserve a place for your ward(s) NOW! e mail: info@merygold.biz

MERYGOLD'S PERFECT VACATION ENGLISH PROJECT 2011
|
After all the teachers in Nigeria are doing a great job.
Well, you're right. The teachers are doing their best. But their best might not be good enough for the children. Your child
is born in the age of amazing technology. And like other children in other countries of the west, he/she is not less
intelligent. But has he/she been receiving the right instructions as far as public or home schooling is concerned?
The official language in Nigeria is English, so examinations are set in English. And an average child is expected to read
the instructions on their examination papers and answer the questions asked or carry out an assignment as required. It
would be no exaggeration to state that some children do not even know what the instructions are saying. How then do we
expect such a child to answer the questions correctly?
We believe that there is the need to create a very special learning environment for young people. The programs offer
professional, effective learning activities during which children and teenagers learn a lot of new English and polish
existing knowledge. They have fun, start new international friendships, broaden their horizons and increase their self-
confidence. We would like to run a program which provide a safe, healthy environment for a wide variety of supervised
sports and outdoor activities, with many historic and cultural attractions in the locality. Children and teenagers return
healthy and refreshed from Perfect Vacation English program. After a vacation of fun, friendship and learning in a
healthy, natural environment they return to their studies with renewed enthusiasm and determination.
We traditionally believe that good educational background is the pillar on which every other leadership qualities rest.
Most of today’s adults learnt the hardest way. Most of their children are facing basically the same, just a little easier,
perhaps harder. There are new methods of learning in schools around the world. Are they available and acceptable to
our curriculum? Are they well embraced by the school authorities, by the teachers, by inspection boards? Are the
parents involved in the education of their wards? Is discipline humane enough?
In a new world where only the best achieve, we cannot act otherwise. We should endeavour to raise children who would
rub shoulders with the adults of the international society in the future. We strive to develop the same sense of value even
with diverse cultural beliefs.
Educating children properly means educating the adults of the future preparing them for the challenges of an ever
changing world. English language is the reason why Nigeria as a nation remains together. As we can see, it is not just
Nigeria staying together as a nation. The whole world is staying together in all aspects through the English language.
There are those who have English as a second language. We do not fall into this category. We are among the English
speaking nations of the world. The times of sensitive criticisms are over and now that every nation of the world is
embracing the language and those who do not have the opportunity to acquire this language are learning (and investing
heavily in it), taking our rightful place in the world along with others commanding affluence and wealth created by the
knowledge of the language means reclaiming what was actually ours.. Now is the time for Nigeria to act by giving the child
a befitting start.
If an Ibo man could note the flaws in the fluency or the accent of a Yoruba or a Hausa person trying to speak the Igbo
language, why do we have to pretend that English is better off the way we use it when we know that we are not using it in
a proper way? If we understand and accept the standard within the country, we should realise that it would be
substandard outside the country. We would like to see doors open; not shut in our face.
There is very liitle chance for a person embracing a language without embracing parts of the culture and spotting the
right accent. No doubt we might argue that we will never reproduce it exactly like the British. Who says so? Well, even if
some would never be able to do so, they will at least be closer. Closer creates a better feeling and a good sense of
belonging in a world where majority want to belong. So as much as we try to make the English culture a part of our
culture (and we do), it is as much as we can profit in a society that is global... In a world where youth culture is global.
Our aim therefore is to reestablish the standards in the minds of our children. To give them English as it should be. To
make learning the language a natural process thereby making the experience of having to learn all the other subjects
and or passing through life’s endeavours in English language a much easier task.
Duration
The programs will run from 2weeks to 4weeks as well as 6-8 weeks depending on the needs of a group of learners
and/or their locality. These are well packaged programs which address the language needs of the participants achieving
the required effect at the planned space in time. What knowledge will have been impacted into a participant will act as the
concentrated energy and motivation to be spread over their next academic year and onward applying the same skills in
other subjects and understanding instructions more than just carrying out a set of pre arranged routines in their
classroom teachers’ habitual contexts.
The teachers
The project will recruit teachers from recommended schools and other areas which have been well scrutinized by our
representatives. These teachers must be holders of certificates from recognised higher institutions and must have very
good command of the English language (not just writing and grammatical skills; spoken as well as culture).
The Cities
Lagos, Ibadan, Ado Ekiti, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Sagamu and Warri with (ranging from) two to five approved schools from
each city.
A teacher to every 10-15 children.
In an effective learning classroom, no more than ten to fifteen children should be with one teacher in any given
classroom at any given time while the project lasts. When the teacher has flexible eye contacts with the children, learning
becomes more fun and effective. Eye contact helps the teacher to determine how well the learners really understand
even when they claim to have understood (while they might not have). Within a short course period, the teacher is able
to know his/her learners individually and keep better personal relationships with them. Less time is also spent and more
achieved on the materials while feedback turns in much faster thereby creating trusted rapport and maximum efficiency in
Defining children
Children in this project are wards between the age of 4-17 who are at school, or at home. (For special ability children,
our representatives will be directed to visit their schools or organisations where they learn or are taken care of to assess
the possibility of cooperating with such institutions and utilising their special facilities to achieve required results with such
children).
Selecting the teachers
When intending teachers have submitted their applications and their credentials checked, they will have to attend an
interview with the project representatives’ interview panel in their area. Screening process might be tough. Yes, because
the project would like to settle for the best teachers they can find. And the project will maintain these rigorous screening
and recruitment styles in subsequent years. Having been selected by the representatives’ designated panel, their
documents will be forwarded to Merygold UK or Poland team for further interview. The interview will be conducted by
phone and this final interview will determine the readiness of the teacher for induction or trainablility if required.

SUMMER ENGLISH LANGUAGE SCHOOL 2011 IN NIGERIA
The summer of 2010 promises to be exciting and offers children, teenagers and adults something to really look forward to. A language learning revolution that might change the lives of the various participants forever and open doors of opportunities in a world where nothing can be achieved without the embrace of globalization.
